The Milpitas Police Department reported that Vinh Nguyen, 36, Betty Pham, 36, and their two children, ages 9 and 4, were found dead in their apartment on Tuesday, Dec. 17. Officers conducted a welfare check at the Turing Apartments on McCandless Drive after family members became concerned when they hadn’t heard from them for several days.
When officers entered the apartment, they discovered all four family members deceased. According to Lt. Tyler Jamison, the father, Vinh Nguyen, is believed to be the suspect. A handgun, legally registered to him, was found at the scene, and all victims had single gunshot wounds.
The tragedy is thought to have occurred on Saturday, Dec. 14, based on a preliminary investigation. Reports indicate that Vinh Nguyen and Betty Pham were going through a divorce, but police found no previous reports of domestic violence related to the family in Milpitas.
Both parents worked for the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), as confirmed by a VTA spokesperson.
Neighbors expressed shock and sadness over the incident. Jerry Saldana, a resident living above the family, said, “It’s scary. We have children ourselves, and to think this happened just below us is heartbreaking.”
In a statement, the Milpitas Police Department shared their condolences, saying, “We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. The loss of these lives was preventable, and we urge those in need to seek help to avoid such incidents.”
