His lawyers argued he was having a mental health crisis at the time and asked for a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 25 years.
However, the judge gave him a life sentence with parole possible only after 49 and a half years, which is what the prosecution wanted. The judge called it “the worst case I’ve ever seen.”

Here’s what happened the night of the crime:
- Martin hadn’t slept or eaten for days.
- He started kicking his baby and her mother while they were in bed.
- When the mother tried to move to another room with the baby, Martin grabbed London and threw her off the balcony.
- The mother found her baby in the parking lot and called 911.
- Martin then set the living room on fire, killing the family’s pet poodle.
- A neighbor heard him say, “Burn, (expletive) burn. This is what you get for cheating on me.”
- He drove away, leading police on a dangerous car chase that involved three crashes.
- He abandoned his car at an airport, ran inside, and got onto a luggage conveyor belt that took him to the airport tarmac, where he was finally arrested.
Martin was taken to a hospital for injuries from the crashes and a drug evaluation before being officially charged with murder, animal cruelty, and arson.
His lawyer argued that he has a mental health condition called schizoaffective disorder and that he thought he was in a movie at the time of the crime.
Martin was convicted of 13 felonies, including murder, animal cruelty, arson, child abuse, and charges related to the police chase.
London’s mother was in court for the sentencing and told the judge that Martin “just needs help.”
