He also hit two other men with the bat, who ran into the bathroom for safety. They told police they could hear the continued attack on the woman and tried to get out to help, but Rodgers blocked the bathroom door.
After the beating, Rodgers set the bed on fire, but one of the men quickly put it out.
One of the men told police he was renting the room and sometimes let homeless people shower and use the bathroom there. Rodgers and his girlfriend were in the room while she was showering. They started arguing when another man knocked on the door. The renter let him in and asked Rodgers’ girlfriend if she wanted food, which apparently angered Rodgers. He then grabbed the bat, smashed a TV, and began attacking his girlfriend and the other men.
When police arrived, Rodgers reportedly said, “I just killed my son’s mom” and “I think I killed her.” He admitted the bat was the only weapon he used. He later told police he had been frustrated with his girlfriend and others all day. He got even angrier when one of the men asked why she didn’t have any money. Rodgers said he was trying to get her attention by doing “something outrageous,” so he grabbed the bat and hit the TV and then the men.
Rodgers said his anger worsened, and he began hitting his girlfriend. He blamed his initial anger on meth he had used earlier that day. He first hit her in the side, then her face and head, and then her arms and legs as she lay on the ground trying to protect herself. He described himself as “always abusive” but said this attack was much worse. “Today was a different anger,” he told police.
One of the men needed stitches for a head injury, while the other was not seriously hurt.
Rodgers is being held in the Osceola County Jail without bail.
