They found the victim, 25-year-old Kayla Netherland, in the bathroom with gunshot wounds. She was rushed to the hospital. Doctors were able to stabilize her but couldn’t save her baby.
According to police documents, one of Netherland’s friends arrived at the house to do laundry around the time of the shooting. She saw Netherland’s estranged husband, 36-year-old Jeremy McBride, standing over her.

McBride looked at the friend and then walked out without saying anything. The friend told police she believed McBride was responsible. Police used license plate readers to find McBride and pull him over.
McBride got out of his car, which then rolled away and hit a pole because it wasn’t in park. He reportedly told the officer, “I was going to turn myself into the police station,” and said the gun was in the car.
He then asked, “is she ok?” Police found the gun and handwritten notes to his estranged wife about their relationship in the car.
The notes showed McBride’s frustration with her infidelity and their failed relationship. He also wrote about his anger and insecurities, his belief that he wasn’t the kind of person she would want to have children with, and that he had wanted children with her.
After being read his rights, McBride told detectives he was upset that she was pregnant by another man even though they weren’t divorced yet. They had separated in September, but he had hoped they would get back together.
McBride allegedly wrote, “Maybe she will come back one day, but not for me. But in many ways, I killed her.”
He reportedly bought a gun and bullets a few days before the shooting, intending to kill her, the baby, and himself. McBride said he and Netherland had been spending time together on Sunday, shopping before going back to her house.
They were talking in the bathroom, with him sitting on the bed. He reportedly said shooting her “made sense in that moment,” so he shot her five times in the back. He said she didn’t see him shoot.
The local prosecutor said that McBride went to great lengths to do what he intended.
Netherland has had at least two surgeries: one to remove the fetus and another for her internal injuries. She is still in the hospital. McBride is in jail without bail and is charged with attempted murder and feticide (killing an unborn child).
