In one post, Atkins shared a meme that read, “Jan 20 is the Day of Mourning for the USA,” and added, “Bullets please. Please Jesus! Save America.” Another meme featured photos of Presidents Abraham Lincoln, Ronald Reagan, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., and Trump, with the caption: “All stood up to Democrats.
All were shot.” Atkins allegedly commented, “I hope and pray someone kills him. History is supposed to repeat itself. We haven’t had an assassination in years.” In another post, he allegedly wrote, “America needs one good bullet to be saved.”
Police kept an eye on Atkins and stopped his BMW near his home around 7:30 p.m. Friday. During the stop, officers reportedly found cocaine. Atkins admitted to making the posts but said he was joking. However, police did not find it funny.
“This is not a joke,” West Palm Beach Police Chief Tony Araujo said during a press conference on Saturday. “In today’s world, threats like this are taken very seriously. We’ve seen too many examples of threats becoming real.”
Atkins, a registered Democrat, was photographed wearing a Harris/Walz T-shirt. Police are also seeking a mental health protection order against him. The Secret Service has been notified and will decide whether to press federal charges. Atkins is due back in court on February 24.
