On Monday, Jan. 27, 42-year-old Melanie Biggins pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter for the death of her husband, Ettienne L. McEwan, on Aug. 31, 2022, according to online court records.
Biggins was originally charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action when she was arrested on the same day of the killing. However, as part of a plea deal with prosecutors, she agreed to plead guilty to the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. If she had gone to trial on the original charges, she could have faced life in prison.
According to previous reports, Biggins called 911 around 1 a.m. on Aug. 31, 2022, claiming that an intruder had broken into their home and shot McEwan while they were both asleep.
When officers arrived, they found Biggins performing CPR on her husband. She told police she had woken up to the sound of a gunshot, turned on the light, and saw that McEwan had been shot under his chin. She said she ran downstairs and saw the front door open but didn’t see anyone.
However, investigators quickly became suspicious.
At first, Biggins told police the only gun in the house was her husband’s rifle. But later, she admitted that she had bought a gun from a pawn shop.
Police then found a pillow and blanket on the floor with bullet holes, along with a .38 Special handgun hidden under a bunk bed in another room.
Eventually, Biggins confessed. She admitted to having an affair for the last year and a half of her nine-year marriage. She also told investigators that she wanted to leave McEwan but couldn’t afford a divorce.
