An Ohio mother is facing serious charges after her 3-year-old son died from severe burns caused by hot water.
On the morning of Jan. 6, 45-year-old Laronda Mims called 911, saying her toddler, Emmanuel, had pulled a pot of hot water off the stove in their apartment. The boiling water spilled on him, and he became unresponsive, according to the Columbus Division of Police.

Paramedics rushed Emmanuel to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where doctors tried to save him. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at 8:18 a.m.
Due to the circumstances of the incident, police launched an investigation. While Mims was initially detained, she was later released without charges.
However, after further review, a grand jury indicted her on Jan. 28 for child endangerment—one felony count, one misdemeanor—and involuntary manslaughter. A warrant was issued for her arrest the same day.
Authorities say Franklin County Children’s Services was already involved with the family before Emmanuel’s death. A neighbor, Latrice Edgington, told local news that police had been seen at the apartment multiple times since the family moved in last summer.
Edgington also witnessed the heartbreaking scene as first responders carried Emmanuel out of the apartment. “The baby had a little mask on his face… Just seeing him wrapped up in that blanket, I was just crying,” she said.
The Franklin County Coroner’s Office is performing an autopsy to determine Emmanuel’s exact cause of death, but the results have not yet been released.
