According to prosecutors, Martins grabbed a 13-year-old girl’s hair while visiting the Queen of Apostles parish in Joliet as part of a religious tour. Witnesses say he joked about being bald before pulling out the girl’s hair, placing it in his mouth, and making a flossing motion. A teenage boy who was in line to see the relics reported the incident to the police.
Martins allegedly later sat behind the girl in a pew and made growling noises, according to police. Following the incident, the Diocese of Joliet ordered him to leave the parish and banned him from the area.
Martins was arrested on January 27 and charged with battery. He was later released with an order to appear in court. The religious order he belongs to, Companions of the Cross, announced that he had agreed to step away from his ministry. The Archdiocese of Detroit also confirmed that he is prohibited from public ministry in their jurisdiction.
His attorney, Marcella Burke, called the charges “completely false,” claiming they were an attempt to take down a respected priest. She said they are confident he will be cleared of all charges.
