A fresh start turned into a horrifying crime. A New York father allegedly lured his teenage daughter to Pakistan—only to kill her over her TikTok videos.

Hira’s father, Anwar-ul-Haq, allegedly admitted to killing his daughter on Monday, Jan. 27, because he found her TikTok videos “objectionable,” police said, according to BBC and CNN.

“Our investigation so far has found that the family had an objection to her dressing, lifestyle, and social gathering,” said police investigator Zohaib Mohsin, according to BBC.

Hira, police said, was allegedly lured out of the country under the guise of visiting extended family in Pakistan, per NYT.

According to BBC and CNN, Haq had recently moved his family to his native Pakistan after living for 25 years in New York, where Hira was born and raised.

When she lived in the U.S., Hira began creating TikTok content he found “objectionable,” her father told police, per BBC.

He said she continued making content on the social media platform after they moved to Pakistan, CNN reported. Hira’s family did not approve of “her dressing, lifestyle and social gathering,” officials told BBC.

Haq has been charged with murder, per BBC, CNN and NYT. In Pakistan, where similar homicides are called “honor-killing,” he could face a mandatory life imprisonment if convicted.

Plea and attorney information for Haq were not available. It wasn’t immediately clear if Haq, a U.S. citizen, will be extradited back to the U.S. or if the State Department is investigating. PEOPLE has reached out to the American consulate in Islamabad for further information.
