A grocery delivery worker in North Carolina is accused of shooting and killing a police officer while shopping for a customer’s order at a supermarket. Tarell McMillian, 34, allegedly opened fire on Officer Michael Horan inside a Food Lion in Greensboro on Monday before fleeing the scene.
The incident began when police responded to a 911 call about a “suspicious person, possibly armed” inside the store. According to officials, Officer Horan arrived first and confronted McMillian.
After a brief struggle, McMillian pulled out a gun and shot the officer before leaving in a vehicle. Investigators said Horan didn’t have time to defend himself.
McMillian, who was working for Instacart, had been shopping for customer Sheila Gonzalez’s grocery order at the time of the shooting. Gonzalez later said she became alarmed when her order was suddenly canceled and reassigned.
After seeing news alerts about the shooting, she feared for her safety, especially because McMillian was supposed to deliver the groceries to her home.
McMillian was arrested hours later in Johnston County after a police chase. He has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond.
Officer Horan, remembered as a dedicated public servant and hero, leaves behind a grieving family, with a fundraiser set up to support them.
