According to the Comal County Criminal District Attorney’s Office, Hickman shot his father six times in the head and neck while he was sitting on the couch eating a salad.
On June 29, 2022, Hickman called 911 shortly after midnight and confessed to the crime. During the 20-minute call, he told the operator he had “emptied six rounds” into his father and admitted he needed to “control his anger,” while also acknowledging the consequences of his actions. “To be honest with you, I feel so f—ing great,” he said during the call.

When deputies arrived at the home in Canyon Lake, about 60 miles southwest of Austin, they found Stautzenberger’s body inside. Investigators later revealed that Hickman had moved to Texas from Louisiana just a week before at his father’s urging, as his father believed the move would provide better job opportunities.
During the trial, recordings of Hickman’s 911 call and phone conversations from jail were presented to the jury. In one call, Hickman said he and his father were having a conversation, but his father “kept on wanting to run his f—ing mouth.” In another call with his mother, Hickman questioned how he could avoid getting into situations that might lead him back to jail if he were ever released.
Family members of Stautzenberger gave emotional victim impact statements during the sentencing, saying Hickman had taken the life of the one person who truly believed in him and wanted him to succeed.
Prosecutors praised the jury for their careful consideration and expressed gratitude for bringing a sense of justice to the victim’s family. “This sentence was not only justified but necessary to protect the community, based on Hickman’s own statements in his jail calls,” the DA’s office said.
