In her plea agreement, Flanner admitted that she shot Mendoza because she was angry about the marijuana grinder. “I admit that I shot Ms. Mendoza with malice because I believed she wouldn’t return my grinder, and I became angry with her,” she said in court documents. “I admit that Ms. Mendoza died as a direct result of the gunshot wound I inflicted on her.”
What Happened
According to police, the three family members—Flanner, Mendoza, and Aljuan Mendoza—had been drinking together on the night of July 7, 2022. They went to a QuikTrip gas station, and Aljuan fell asleep in the back of the car while the two women went inside.
He woke up to the sound of a gunshot and saw his wife lying on the ground. She managed to say, “Your sister shot me,” before losing consciousness, according to the police report.
Surveillance footage showed Mendoza trying to crawl away from Flanner before collapsing. Flanner then ran from the scene.
After being arrested, Flanner admitted to shooting Mendoza. She told detectives that she was furious about the grinder and “wanted to hurt” Mendoza, so she pulled the trigger, according to the police report.
Flanner, a citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, was charged in federal court. Her case was handled by the FBI and the Tulsa Police Department. She remains in custody and will be transferred to a federal prison.
Remembering Estrella Mendoza
Mendoza, who was known as “Star,” was a mother of nine children, ranging from toddlers to high schoolers.
A GoFundMe was created to support her family, stating: “The funds will help with all the expenses associated with this… this tragedy that our families are trying to process. On behalf of our family, we thank you in advance.”
