The reporter, whose question was partially muffled by background noise, asked: “Is there anything President Trump could take from President Carter?”
Biden replied:
“Decency. Decency. Decency. Everyone deserves a chance. Can you imagine Jimmy Carter ignoring someone in need? Can you imagine him judging someone based on how they look or speak? I can’t. Carter stood for the values we, as Americans, should strive for. The world admired him as a leader. Thank you.”
Biden’s comments came after statements from Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance paying tribute to Carter.
Vance’s Statement:
“Jimmy Carter dedicated his life to serving this country. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones. May he rest in peace.”
Trump’s Initial Statement:
“I just heard about the passing of President Jimmy Carter. As Presidents, we share a unique understanding of the responsibilities of leading this great nation. Carter faced many challenges during a critical time in America’s history and worked tirelessly to improve people’s lives. For that, we owe him our gratitude. Melania and I extend our condolences to the Carter family during this difficult time. Please keep them in your prayers.”
Trump’s Follow-Up Statement:
“President Jimmy Carter has passed away at 100. While we had political and philosophical differences, I respected his love for our country and his efforts to make it better. He was a good man and will be deeply missed. After his presidency, he remained a highly influential and impactful figure. Warmest condolences from Melania and me to his family.”
