The pursuit took a shocking turn when the fleeing suspect drove into the busy shopping mall. A Department of Public Safety trooper fatally shot the suspect, DPS Sgt. Bryan Washko confirmed.
The incident has left multiple bystanders injured, although their current conditions remain unknown.
As the situation unfolded, the Killeen Police Department took to Facebook, urging the public to steer clear of the area while first responders worked to secure the scene and investigate.
Ofelia Miramontez, a spokesperson for the Killeen Police, told the Killeen Daily Herald that the chase originated in Belton and ended when the vehicle entered the mall, resulting in reported injuries. However, authorities have not yet confirmed if there were any additional fatalities.
The Killeen Mall, a popular shopping destination in a city located roughly 150 miles south of Dallas and home to the Army’s Fort Cavazos (formerly Fort Hood), became the epicenter of the tragic events.
