Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) didn’t hold back on Wednesday night when he blasted House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) during an interview on Fox News.

“Why would you put this mess on Donald Trump before he’s even back in office?” Hawley asked, clearly frustrated.
He was referring to Johnson’s plan to fund the government temporarily until mid-March, which Hawley believes would cause more issues down the line.
“In March, this bill would lead to another government shutdown. Then we’d have to go through the debt ceiling drama all over again in the same year. It’s a terrible idea. I can’t believe Republican leaders came up with this, and it’s obvious they didn’t consult Trump,” he said.
Hawley didn’t stop there. He questioned whether the Republican Party needs new leadership in Congress, calling the whole situation “a disaster.”
“If this is the best they can do, it’s complete incompetence,” he added.
The bill itself included funding for hurricane relief ($100 billion), support for farmers ($10 billion), and a plan to give Washington, D.C., control of Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium. This would allow the city to try to bring the Washington Commanders football team back to the capital.
However, the bill collapsed on Wednesday after backlash from both Donald Trump and Elon Musk. Musk, who’s been tasked with finding ways to cut massive amounts from the federal budget, reportedly didn’t support the plan.
