Since 2022, the State Department has allowed people to choose a third gender marker, “X,” on their passports without providing medical proof.
This option was created for people who don’t identify as strictly male or female, including nonbinary and intersex individuals. The new Trump administration policy will eliminate this option.

The official stated that all federal agencies must prioritize biological sex in their regulations, documents, and practices.
They emphasized that recognizing self-identified genders over biological sex undermines trust in government and causes confusion in how terms are understood by the public.
