The events began on November 7 at Broadmoor Self-Storage in Kentwood. That afternoon, smoke was seen coming from several storage units.
Firefighters responded and had to cut the lock on Unit 454, where they discovered Abosamra’s charred remains after putting out the fire.
“It’s not normal to find someone in a storage unit,” said Kentwood Police Capt. Jason Roelofs. He added that investigators were trying to determine if it was foul play or an incident related to people living in storage units.
According to court records, Abosamra was locked inside the unit without a phone for 10 hours before the fire was reported. Authorities identified Wingeier as the person who rented the unit.
Wingeier’s mother told investigators that her daughter had a prior relationship with Abosamra and had allowed her, who was homeless, to stay in the storage unit.
Police found Wingeier at a hotel the day after the fire. She reportedly admitted locking the unit to hide the fact that Abosamra was staying there. Wingeier said she had planned to return to unlock the unit but got delayed, according to court records.
Abosamra was remembered as a loving and talented individual. Her family described her as a gifted musician who played multiple instruments and shared her joy through music.
She attended the University of Michigan, where she earned a psychology degree and volunteered with Best Buddies International to support people with disabilities.
“She affected so many lives and spread so much joy,” her family wrote in her obituary. “She lived her life passionately, wanting to change the world. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten.”
Wingeier is being held in the Kent County Jail on a $50,000 bond. She is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday. Court records show she had a prior conviction for methamphetamine use in 2023.
