CNN reported, “Rep. Anna Paulina Luna repeatedly urged Speaker Mike Johnson, a self-proclaimed pro-family advocate, to support her proposal allowing new mothers to vote remotely for six weeks while recovering from childbirth. When he refused, she turned to Democrats for support.”
Now, Luna is teaming up with House Democrats, including Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, to propose an even broader rule: allowing new parents, both mothers and fathers, to vote remotely for 12 weeks. Her main partner on this effort is Rep. Brittany Pettersen, who is currently pregnant.
Luna and Pettersen plan to bring the proposal to the House floor using a discharge petition—a rare move, especially for a lawmaker to use against their own party leadership.
They believe the measure has a strong chance of passing, as only a few Republican votes would be needed to join the Democrats in support.
The situation highlights the challenges of the Republicans’ narrow majority in the House, which makes it easier for individual members like Luna to break from party leadership and collaborate with Democrats.
Luna criticized Johnson’s stance, calling it “a slap in the face to every single constituent that we’ve had that sent us to Washington DC.”
