A man from Kentucky, Anthony Trice, 32, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter for the death of his 1-month-old son.

Trice got frustrated while losing in a video game, threw his controller, and hit the infant with his fist. He then picked up the baby to comfort him but accidentally dropped him while walking to the kitchen to prepare a bottle.
Trice later found the baby in distress after stepping away to use the bathroom and called 911. The baby was taken to a hospital but sadly passed away the next day.
Initially charged with first-degree child abuse, Trice’s charges were upgraded to murder after the baby’s death. He later entered an Alford plea to manslaughter, meaning he didn’t admit guilt but acknowledged there was enough evidence for a conviction. Trice was sentenced on December 19, 2019, in Jefferson Circuit Court.
The baby’s family was devastated by the loss. The child’s mother had left him with Trice for the weekend to attend Kentucky Derby festivities, and the family had no signs of trouble beforehand. “I wouldn’t have ever thought this would happen to our family,” said the baby’s grandmother, Tanjia Howlett.
