Police found Machado Vasquez driving the Mustang. He tried to escape but crashed into another car and was taken to the hospital with injuries.
Police found Perez dead inside the car with a gunshot wound.
Before the crash, Machado Vasquez told the person who called 911 that he was driving around with Perez’s body. The caller said he sounded “panicked” and told her it was an accident.
Machado Vasquez claimed they were arguing, and Perez grabbed his gun. He said he took it back, pointed it at his own head, and told her, “If you’re going to do it, do it right.”
He then claimed he had the safety on and was “testing” Perez when the gun went off.
Police say he drove around with her body for about an hour and a half. The person who called 911 said their relationship had been “on-again, off-again” since high school and described it as “toxic.”
A friend of Perez, Diana Barrios, also described the relationship as toxic, saying Perez was sometimes afraid to leave her house because Machado Vasquez would watch her for hours.
Barrios also said he would harass Perez even after she blocked his number, making new numbers to contact her and sometimes threatening her.
Barrios recalled one night in November when Perez was so scared she asked Barrios to pick her up because she didn’t want to be alone with him. Perez told Barrios that he had a gun and that things were bad between them.
Perez’s family and friends confirmed that their relationship was troubled. The person who called 911 also told police that Machado Vasquez always carried a gun.
Machado Vasquez is in jail without bail and is charged with murder. He missed a court date due to medical reasons.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help Perez’s family. Barrios shared a memory of texting Perez the Saturday before her death about plans to get sushi and go hiking.
Perez had replied that she wasn’t ready as she had just had her lashes done. That was their last conversation.
