During a chat on MSNBC, former Republican National Committee chair Michael Steele shared some interesting thoughts about the Republican Party’s future. He hinted that there’s a growing divide in the party, partly thanks to the influence of billionaire Elon Musk.
The conversation was with Mike Smith, the president of the House Majority PAC, who talked about how Democrats are planning to win back control of the House in 2026. “There are races people don’t think are competitive,” Smith said. “That’s why we’re out there early, talking to voters and building strong campaigns.”
But Steele added a twist to the discussion, saying the Democrats might not have to do all the work themselves. He explained that Elon Musk’s recent involvement in politics is shaking things up within the Republican Party. Musk has even hinted that he might support primary challenges against Republicans who don’t align with his ideas.
Steele explained, “We’re starting to see two groups form in the Republican Party. On one side, you have the MAGA crowd – the hardcore Trump supporters with their red hats. But now, there’s another group emerging that I call the ‘Musk Republicans.’”
According to Steele, this divide could create real competition during Republican primaries. “It’s going to be interesting to watch how these groups fight it out,” he said. “Democrats should pay attention because this could create opportunities for them to flip some seats.”
