The suspect was killed in a shootout with police shortly after the attack. Two officers injured in the exchange are reported to be in stable condition, according to authorities.
Biden’s Statement
In a statement, President Biden, 82, said he has been “continually briefed” by federal law enforcement leaders, his homeland security team, and the mayor of New Orleans about the “horrific incident.”
“The FBI is leading the investigation and treating this as an act of terrorism,” Biden confirmed.
He also expressed gratitude for the “brave and swift response” of local law enforcement, which prevented more loss of life. The president assured that federal, state, and local agencies will receive the resources they need to handle the investigation and support the affected community.
“My heart goes out to the victims and their families who were simply celebrating the holiday,” Biden said. “There is no justification for violence of any kind, and we will not tolerate attacks on any of our nation’s communities.”
Details of the Attack
The tragedy occurred at approximately 3:15 a.m. on Jan. 1, when the driver of a pickup truck intentionally drove into a crowd on Bourbon Street.
In a press conference, New Orleans Police Superintendent Chief Anne Kirkpatrick stated, “It was very intentional behavior. This man was trying to harm as many people as possible. This was not a DUI; it’s far more complex and serious.”
FBI’s Role
The FBI is collaborating with local authorities to investigate the incident as an act of terrorism.
So far, no details about the suspect have been released. Authorities have promised to provide further updates during a press conference scheduled for 11 a.m. local time on Wednesday, Jan. 1.
