Her partner, Jose Lucas Morfin Jr., was arrested at the scene and later indicted on December 20. He now faces multiple charges, including manslaughter, assault, abuse of a corpse, and weapons charges.
Morfin has pleaded not guilty to all charges, according to the Statesman Journal.
Remembering Mary McDowell
McDowell’s family described her as a compassionate caregiver who devoted her life to helping others, particularly those nearing the end of their lives.
In a heartfelt statement shared through the sheriff’s office, her family said, “Mary was a sweet, kind, caring soul with a delightful giggle who spent her entire life serving and caring for others.”
They recounted how McDowell provided end-of-life care for family members, including her late husband, and even for residents at her mother’s memory care facility.
“She helped so many people throughout her lifetime, and we are asking the public to help her now,” the family pleaded, urging anyone who may have known McDowell or interacted with her and Morfin to come forward with information.
Morfin’s Defense
During a December 16 court appearance, Morfin made an emotional statement, denying the charges and pleading with McDowell’s family to withhold judgment.
“Lori, I was there with Mary, and I tried to revive her!” he said, addressing someone he referred to as his “sister-in-law.” He added, “I love Mary with all my heart,” according to KPTV.
Investigation Ongoing
The circumstances surrounding McDowell’s death remain under investigation. Authorities are seeking additional information from anyone who may have crossed paths with McDowell and Morfin.
