King was arrested on Tuesday and charged with one count of murder in the death of Kenneth Lemar Richards.
The shooting happened on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, around 9:45 a.m. when police responded to a call about a shooting near 1400 E. Lewis Street. When they arrived, officers found Richards, who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite efforts to help him, Richards was pronounced dead at the scene. The coroner ruled his death a homicide.
King was arrested at the scene, but the relationship between him and Richards is unclear.
Court documents obtained by Fort Wayne CBS affiliate WANE revealed more details about the incident. King was the one who called 911, saying that Richards died after they fought over a gun. King repeatedly said, “I called it self-defense.”
In an interview with detectives, King said he was in the garage trying to fix the power to the house so he could heat up food when Richards came in, angry and threatening him.
They argued, and King claimed Richards started saying “threatening things,” so King went upstairs to get his firearm.
King said the argument continued, and when Richards “charged at him,” he shot him. King said Richards ended up on top of him, and he shot him a second time.
After that, King was able to get away from Richards, but he shot him a third time. When detectives asked King about how Richards threatened him, he couldn’t provide any specific details but said he felt in danger because of Richards’ “tone.”
King initially told 911 that they fought over the gun but later changed his story to say that wasn’t the case, claiming he “had to do what he had to do.”
After the shooting, King reportedly took his gun with him, went upstairs to shower, and then called 911 about 10 to 20 minutes later.
King is being held in the Allen County Jail without bond.
