Fan Weiqiu, 62, was sentenced on December 27 by the Zhuhai Intermediate People’s Court for “endangering public safety by dangerous means,” according to China’s state-run news agency, Xinhua.
The incident occurred on November 11 in Zhuhai, a city in southern China’s Guangdong province. Fan drove his car into a group of people exercising outside a stadium. According to local police, the attack left 35 people dead and 43 others injured.
Authorities believe Fan was upset about the financial terms of his divorce settlement, which reportedly motivated the attack, the Associated Press reported.
This was not the first car attack in China recently. Earlier in December, another man in Hunan province received a suspended death sentence for driving his car into a crowd of schoolchildren in November, injuring 30 people, including 18 children.
