When police arrived, they said Merkel looked very upset and had blood on him. He later told detectives that he had shown the boy guns because he wanted to impress him.
Merkel said he didn’t think the gun would fire because he thought he had removed the magazine (which holds the bullets). He said he then called 911 after the shooting.
Merkel is in jail. It’s not known if he has pleaded guilty or not guilty, or if he has a lawyer.
The boy, Michael Meagher, was a second-grader at Brook Park Elementary School in Illinois. The school district said they were very sad to hear about his death and that he was a kind and well-loved student. They are focusing on supporting his family and the school community during this difficult time.
