KayLee’s friend told police they first noticed the suspects and the black truck at the apartment complex, where both the girls and the suspects were there for separate reasons.
Police have witness accounts and security camera footage confirming the black truck was in the area.
Police say Hess-Witucki and Galloway confessed to the crime after being informed of their legal rights. Hess-Witucki said he was driving the truck, and Galloway admitted to firing the shots from the passenger seat.
They told police they chased KayLee’s vehicle because they thought they had seen it in their neighborhood before and believed the people inside were following them.
Galloway reportedly wrote a letter to KayLee’s parents apologizing for his actions. Sorber-Petrie, who was with Felipe at the time, admitted to giving the gun to the other two men knowing they intended to chase KayLee.
KayLee’s parents spoke about their daughter. Her father, Waylon Dutton, shared the last words he said to her as she left home on January 17th: “She came in.
Her mom said, ‘Where are you going now, Kaylee?’ She said, ‘I don’t know. We’re going to go find something.’ My last words to her were, ‘Just be careful.'”
