Musk Says Tesla’s Cybercab Could Be as Big as the Model 3

Tesla has had several major moments that shaped its path to success. One of the most notable was the unveiling of the Model S, which proved the company could build a vehicle from scratch.

Then there was the Model 3 launch, showing Tesla’s ambition to become a mass-market automaker. Now, according to Elon Musk, the upcoming Robotaxi event on October 10, 2024, might be the next big milestone.

Musk hinted on social media platform X that this Robotaxi unveiling could be as important as the Model 3’s debut back in 2016. A longtime Tesla Full Self-Driving (FSD) user mentioned that the upcoming event could be Tesla’s biggest moment since the Model 3 launch. Musk responded, agreeing that this unveiling would be a pivotal event for the company.

When the Model 3 was first introduced, it wasn’t just a turning point for Tesla, but for the electric vehicle (EV) movement as a whole. At the time, Tesla announced it had received 115,000 pre-orders for the car, which was a shockingly high number, especially since many buyers placed their orders without even seeing the vehicle.

This overwhelming demand showed the world that people were ready for a more affordable, premium electric car. While Tesla struggled through “production hell” to meet the Model 3’s demand, today, it’s almost amusing to think that 115,000 pre-orders for an EV seemed so massive back then.

Now, Tesla is preparing to unveil the Cybercab, a vehicle designed to lead the company’s vision for autonomous ride-hailing. The Cybercab will reportedly be smaller than the Model 3 and built specifically for Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system. According to biographer Isaac Walterson, the Cybercab is expected to be a compact two-seater without a steering wheel.

While specific details about the Cybercab are still under wraps, Tesla has revealed that the vehicle will be built using its innovative “Unboxed” manufacturing process and will be produced at Giga Texas. All eyes are on the October 2024 event, as it may mark the beginning of Tesla’s future in autonomous transportation.
