- Police received a 911 call about a man who might have a gun.
- Officer Shenaqua Stringer arrived first and saw the man reaching into his pocket and pulling out something.
- She drew her gun and approached the man.
- Officer Fabio Bolanos arrived in his patrol car from the other direction and ran towards Stringer and the man.
- As Stringer was taking the man to the ground, Bolanos tried to help her.
- Stringer’s gun accidentally fired, hitting Bolanos in the leg.
The man on the ground, who only had a lighter, said, “Why’d you do that? Ain’t nobody do nothing. You f—ed up his leg. He’s bleeding a lot.”
Bolanos was in a lot of pain. He and Stringer tried to handcuff the man while waiting for help. Bolanos asked for a tourniquet (a device to stop bleeding).

Other officers arrived and put a tourniquet on Bolanos’s leg. They took him to the hospital in a police car. On the way, Bolanos called his wife and told her he had been shot in the leg but was okay.
At the scene, police found no gun, only the lighter. The man was having a mental health crisis and wasn’t charged with anything.
Bolanos has recovered and is back at work but is thinking about suing the city. Stringer was moved to a different position within the police department, and an internal investigation is still ongoing.
