During their investigation, police found CCTV footage showing Madhavi entering her home with Murthy on January 15—but never leaving. This made officers suspect that she had been murdered inside the house.
On Tuesday, nearly two weeks after Madhavi was last seen, police brought Murthy in for questioning. He allegedly confessed to the crime, telling police that he and his wife had a heated argument on the morning of January 16.
In his statement, he claimed he slapped her with the intent to kill before strangling her.
Realizing she was dead, Murthy allegedly tried to cover up the murder by cutting her body into pieces, putting them in a bucket, and boiling them before burning them on a gas stove, police said.
Officers believe Murthy spent about eight hours destroying evidence. He allegedly ground her bones into powder, flushed some remains down the drain, and kept others in the house for later disposal.
“He murdered his wife in an inhumane way,” police stated.
Murthy has been arrested on charges of murder, cruelty toward a spouse, and tampering with evidence.
PEOPLE was unable to contact an attorney for Murthy at the time of reporting.
