After TikTok shut down late Saturday night, Donald Trump took to his Truth Social account to express his support for the popular but controversial platform.
Shortly before the app’s scheduled closure, TikTok itself pulled the plug, displaying a message that read, in part: “Sorry, TikTok isn’t available right now,” followed by, “We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Trump responded on Truth Social with a simple message: “SAVE TIKTOK!”
However, not all of his supporters were on board. Many voiced concerns about TikTok’s ties to China and the risks to national security.
- T.W. Fuller, a self-proclaimed conservative, commented: “Save America first, then we can worry about what happens to TikTok. But if TikTok is to be saved, make it American owned, and make it safe for everyone who uses it. “
- Rich Rhonda wrote, “Only if China doesn’t own it. I don’t want them stealing my information.”
- CedarRockSC urged, “No mercy for TikTok. Other apps like Redbook and Lemon8 should also be banned or forced to divest.”
Others were more critical of Trump’s stance:
- GiaB accused, “This tells Americans you’re cozying up to China!”
- Kristine.Thomas11 questioned, “Was @realDonaldTrump hacked?”
- ChiefO ranted, “LET TIKTOK BURN TO HELL IF CCP is NOT selling to USA Investors STOP BEING CHILDISH. TIKTOK IS AN EVIL DATA COLLECTION APP THAT IS DESIGNED TO DESTROY MIND & SOUL OF USA IDIOTS THAT USE IT WAKE UP & DONT MAKE THE MISTAKE Anything China is out to destroy USA”
Some tied the issue to broader political concerns:
