Former Top Gear host and car expert James May recently shared his thoughts on Tesla’s Cybertruck, and to the surprise of many, he’s actually a fan. Despite not being a lover of pickup trucks, May was impressed by the bold design and unique features of the Cybertruck. He even expressed a wish for Tesla to create a smaller electric vehicle with a similar design style.
In his review on his YouTube channel, James May’s Planet Gin, he admitted that the Cybertruck is a massive, wide vehicle, but still very cool. May also praised some of the truck’s standout innovations, like its steer-by-wire system, four-wheel steering, and signature Tesla technology.
What caught May’s imagination the most was the idea of shrinking the Cybertruck’s angular, aggressive design into something more compact—around the size of a Ford Focus. He compared it to iconic cars like the Lamborghini Countach, which had a similar eye-catching appeal in the 1980s.
Even though he’s not a pickup truck enthusiast, May confessed that he genuinely likes the Cybertruck. He pointed out that it’s a polarizing vehicle, but its bold design makes everything else on the road look dull by comparison. To wrap up his review, he made a personal appeal to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, asking for a smaller Tesla with the same edgy design.
“I think the Cybertruck is very bold and has a sense of humor, but I’m glad it exists. If I could ask Elon Musk for one thing, it would be to make something about the size of the Model Y, maybe even smaller, but with the same styling. I’d definitely go for that,” May said.
As one of the original Top Gear trio, May is known for his deep knowledge of electric vehicles. He’s even owned Teslas in the past, including a Model S 100D and a reengineered Model 3, which he mentioned in his Cybertruck review.
