The 34-year-old mother reportedly left their apartment, and the children stopped going to school.
Investigators first found clues that the family had traveled to Denver, Colorado. They then learned the mother and children had gone to London, England. From there, they traveled to the island of Jersey, which is off the coast of France, about 200 miles south of London. Finally, the mother took the children to a remote fishing village in Iceland, over 2,500 miles away from Jersey.
Although the name of the village hasn’t been released, Icelandic police found the children at a motel in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland.
The children are safe and are now being cared for by social services in Iceland until they can be returned to family members they can trust.
The mother is in a hospital and will be brought back to the U.S. once she recovers. It’s not yet known if she will face any charges.
