A Las Vegas man is accused of killing his new girlfriend just days before Christmas after promising her mother he’d get her home safely.
Markeem Benson, 29, allegedly shot Renise “NeNe” Wolfe, 33, four times in the back of the head at her apartment after they attended a family holiday party.
Wolfe’s mother, Tracy Coleman, said she last saw her daughter on Saturday night when Benson assured her, “I’ll take care of her, I promise.” But the next morning, Wolfe was found dead in her apartment on East Rome Boulevard.
Benson’s father reportedly called police, saying his son wanted to turn himself in for the crime. Benson, who was on probation for attempted robbery, was arrested on Thursday and charged with murder and weapons offenses.
Prosecutors say Benson claimed there was a struggle and the gun went off, but Wolfe’s family described him as a loving and caring boyfriend during the five months they had known him. Coleman said Benson made them trust him, regularly checking in on Wolfe and visiting her at work.
Wolfe’s family is now determined to see justice served. They plan to attend every court hearing, despite tensions between the families. After Benson’s arraignment, a fight broke out in court between Wolfe’s and Benson’s relatives, leading to Wolfe’s father being detained briefly. Benson remains in custody without bond due to his prior convictions.
