Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) weighed in on the division within the MAGA movement regarding immigration after Vivek Ramaswamy stirred controversy on the right by suggesting that the U.S. needs to attract more skilled workers due to American culture producing mediocre outcomes among the population.
Ramaswamy argued on Thursday on X: “The reason top tech companies hire foreign-born and first-generation engineers over native-born Americans isn’t because of a supposed American IQ problem. Greene, always ready to get involved in cultural debates, shared her thoughts in a long post, trying to find a middle ground.
“Good gracious, I came out of Christmas break to see fights about American workers vs. imported workers and MAGA supporters split on the issue,” Greene wrote, adding:
“At least this shows everyone cares about saving the country. Here’s the tough reality: Some big MAGA voices with huge social media followings are giving their opinions, but they’ve never run a business that needs thousands of skilled workers. They don’t really understand the issue.”
She continued: “When you spend years trying to hire and train reliable workers, it’s a constant, never-ending task. Your opinion will be based on real experience, not on social media followers.”
Greene seemed to be responding to people like Laura Loomer, who criticized Elon Musk for supporting the H1-B visa. Axios reported that Loomer, along with others like Gavin Wax and Owen Shroyer, lost their verification badges after criticizing Musk’s stance on H1-B visas and attacking Ramaswamy.
Greene also agreed with some of Ramaswamy’s views about American workers not being prepared to succeed:
“Too many young people are wasting their lives on alcohol and drugs, earning useless degrees, chasing unrealistic dreams, or trying to become YouTubers or influencers instead of learning useful skills that could help fill the jobs American companies need to hire for.”
She urged: “If this is you, stop taking selfies and go apply for a job to replace the foreign workers and take the skilled labor jobs that American companies are desperate to fill.”
She added: “Building a career means working your way up.”
Greene concluded by saying that to move forward, the education system needs to change, there should be more respect for hard work, and government waste, spending, and regulations need to be cut. This, she said, would create a strong economy, lower inflation, and raise wages for American workers, so the need for H1-B visas would disappear.
Greene’s opinions were swiftly challenged by the far right, with many labeling her viewpoint as “disconnected.” On the other hand, some felt she effectively navigated both sides of the argument.
