Jalen Dashawn Holmes, 18, was found at the scene by Lee County deputies and was arrested that night. He remains in custody at the Lee County Jail.
Lynch and Daly were stepsisters and roommates. Daly was also the mother of a toddler, though it is unclear if the child was in the house during the shooting.
Authorities mentioned that 9-year-old twin girls were in the home earlier but left before the incident. Their connection to the victims has not been clarified.
The shooting occurred in the afternoon, with 911 calls about gunfire coming in at 3:48 p.m. Investigators say Holmes, a neighbor, had reportedly assaulted his mother at their home before going next door to Lynch and Daly’s house with a handgun.
A friend of the victims, Anna Miller, told AL.com that Lynch knew Holmes and had feelings for him. “She was in love with him. This was the last thing we ever expected him to do,” she said.
To help with funeral expenses, a family member of Daly created a GoFundMe page, which has raised over $4,800 toward its $5,000 goal. The relative described the situation as a “nightmarish time” and expressed gratitude for any donations.
Holmes has been charged with capital murder of two or more victims. The investigation into the killings is ongoing.
