This week, the House of Representatives has been a mess, with fights over a spending deal causing major drama. In the middle of all this, some Republicans have floated the wild idea of making Elon Musk the next Speaker of the House.
Yes, that Elon Musk—the guy who builds rockets, electric cars, and runs Twitter (or X, as it’s now called)... Continue reading here ▶
Here’s the deal: the Constitution doesn’t say the Speaker has to be a member of Congress, so technically, it could happen. People like Senator Rand Paul and Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene think Musk could do the job better than current Speaker Mike Johnson, who’s struggling to keep things together. But not everyone agrees—especially Rep. Steve Womack from Arkansas.
Womack spoke with CNN’s Brianna Keilar about the idea, and he didn’t hold back. “It’s not going to happen,” he said flatly. “First, Elon would have to want the job, and I just don’t see that happening. When he looks at what past speakers like Kevin McCarthy and Mike Johnson have been through, he’d probably decide that launching rockets and running Tesla is way easier—and a lot more profitable.”
Womack also took a shot at some of his colleagues, like Greene and Rep. Nancy Mace, who are pushing for a government shutdown until Donald Trump takes office again. According to Womack, shutting down the government is a terrible idea, especially for states like Arkansas, which have a lot of military bases that depend on federal funding.
“Shutting the government down makes no sense,” he explained. “Eventually, it has to reopen, and if neither side is willing to compromise, the shutdown will just hurt everyday Americans. The military, federal workers, and families across the country will all feel the pain. It’s not a smart strategy—it’s a disaster waiting to happen.”
Womack warned that a shutdown would also hurt Republicans politically, making it harder for them to lead effectively. “The fallout from this would be huge, and it wouldn’t just affect Congress—it would hurt the incoming president too,” he said.
As for Musk? Let’s be real: he’s already busy running SpaceX, Tesla, and X. Becoming Speaker of the House is probably the last thing on his to-do list. For now, it seems like he’ll stick to rockets and electric cars, leaving the political drama to everyone else.
