Dumble’s friend, who was driving, got out of the car and started a fight with the group. Dumble, who was banned from driving, moved into the driver’s seat and drove toward the fight to pick up his friend.
Instead of leaving the scene, Dumble reversed the car at high speed. Jack Field and another man tried to move between parked cars for safety, but Dumble reversed into them, pinning one man and knocking Jack to the ground.
Witnesses said Dumble looked out of the open driver’s window before driving forward over Jack, killing him instantly.
Jack’s mother, Jayne, described her son in court as her “best friend and protector.” She said, “As a parent, all you want to do is protect your children, and I couldn’t protect you this time. I will forever be grateful that you are my son.”
The victim’s family called Jack “a loving son, brother, and friend” in a statement shared by Sussex Police. “He was the most selfless, respectful gentleman who always put others before himself,” they said.
“He was everyone’s best friend, role model, and hero. Although nothing can bring Jack back, we are pleased he has got the justice he deserves.”
During the trial, Dumble claimed he didn’t intend to hit anyone and blamed the incident on a fault with the vehicle, but his defense was rejected by the court.
Detective Chief Inspector Alex Campbell praised Jack’s family for their strength throughout the investigation. “Nothing can make up for the loss of Jack for his family and loved ones,” he said.
“With his killer behind bars, I hope they now have the opportunity to mourn this tragedy in their own ways.” Campbell also commended the witnesses and investigation team for their efforts in ensuring Dumble was brought to justice.
