When police arrived, they used fire extinguishers to control the fire until firefighters arrived and put it out completely. Police found a 19-year-old man from Menasha near the strip mall.
The teen admitted to starting the fire because of the recent discussions about banning TikTok. He was arrested and charged with arson and is now in jail.
The building was empty when the fire happened, so no one was hurt. Police and fire officials are still investigating.
The police chief said they are relieved no one was injured and that they won’t tolerate violence. He thanked the police officers and firefighters for their quick response.
Congressman Grothman said on social media that no one was hurt and the damage was limited. He also thanked the first responders.
According to news reports, the congressman voted for a bill last April that would force TikTok’s Chinese owners to sell the app or stop operating in the U.S.
The Supreme Court recently ruled that this law was constitutional. This law, requiring TikTok to either be sold by its Chinese owners or be banned, was passed by Congress and signed into law last year. It was first discussed by a former president in 2020.
Following the Supreme Court ruling, TikTok stopped working for users in the U.S. on Saturday, January 18th, but it was back online less than a day later. TikTok said in a statement they were restoring service to Americans.
